Today, 7 June, we celebrate World Food Safety Day, an important opportunity to reflect on the importance of ensuring that the food we consume is safe and of high quality.
“Food safety is everyone’s business” is the claim promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) to remind us that food safety is a collective responsibility.
Everyone, from producers to consumers, has a role to play.
Food safety risks know no borders.
Whether it is a power outage at home, a foodborne illness outbreak in a local restaurant, a voluntary recall of contaminated products by a manufacturer, an epidemic caused by imported food, or a natural disaster, the consequences can extend far beyond the original source. In an increasingly interconnected global food chain, the risks associated with unsafe food can quickly escalate from a local issue into an international emergency.
On this occasion, we would like to focus on two materials used in food packaging and available in the Carte Dozio range: straw paper and glassine paper.
Both are highly valued for their properties and suitability for food-contact applications. They are safe and environmentally responsible solutions, meeting the needs of increasingly sustainability-conscious consumers. Let’s take a closer look at their characteristics.
Straw Paper: Tradition and Sustainability
Straw paper is a traditional and versatile material widely used in the food industry. Originally produced from straw (as discussed in detail in our previous article), today it is mainly manufactured using unbleached cellulose fibres.
Its main characteristics include:
- Natural and biodegradable: it represents an environmentally friendly choice for food packaging.
- Highly absorbent: thanks to its porous structure, it is ideal for fried and greasy foods as it can absorb excess oil.
- Versatile: suitable for wrapping sandwiches, filled rolls, fried foods and many other products, straw paper can be used across a wide range of food applications.
- Rustic appearance: it gives products an authentic look, particularly appreciated by restaurants and delicatessens that focus on a traditional and natural image.
Glassine Paper: Purity and Strength
Glassine paper, also known as parchment paper, is a translucent material obtained through the treatment of cellulose fibres. Approved for direct food contact, it helps prevent contamination and ensures safe packaging.
Its main characteristics include:
- Resistant to moisture and grease: ideal for wrapping fatty or moist foods without tearing or losing its protective properties.
- Protective and insulating: it offers good barrier properties, helping maintain food freshness for longer compared with untreated papers.
- Versatile: commonly used for packaging butter, cheese, smoked meats and baked goods, glassine paper is suitable for a wide variety of food applications.
Making responsible choices today means helping create a safer and more sustainable future for everyone.
Happy World Food Safety Day!
